Schedule

May 27 | DIY Day

Come try something new, get your hands a little dirty, and take your own creations home! The 4th Sunday of every month is DIY Day, when we invite all do-it-yourselfers (and the DIY-curious) to join our community partners for some good ol’ hands-on fun. All activities are FREE!

Stop by Rock Paper Scissors‘ booth during your visit to the market to learn how to use farmers’ market produce and natural materials to dye textiles! The workshop is free and ongoing, so just drop in to learn, watch, or ask questions! RPS will also be selling wares from their member artists — a rare chance to find artisan goods at the market!

Join West Oakland’s own City Slicker Farms to plant a few veggie seeds, learn about their mission to teach Oaklanders how to grow their own food, and pick up some backyard gardening tips!

June 3 | Food Play

The first Sunday of every month is focused on food, cooking, and learning new ways to enjoy and use food from the farmers’ market!

Join Market Chef Mario as he transforms produce available at the market into a simple, delicious dish. Try a sample, take a recipe, and shop the market to make it for yourself!

  • Cook Book Sale | 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. next to the info booth

Find a new cook book — and support your local library system with every purchase! Friends of the Oakland Public Library are here every 1st Sunday with a selection of cooking, gardening, and food books from their used book store, The Bookmark, located just a few blocks away in Old Oakland. The best part — all books at the market cost under $6!

June 10 | Bike to Market

With gas prices on the rise and the weather too good to be true, it’s a darn good time to be a cyclist! Whether you’re an experienced rider or an enthusiastic newbie — on a fixie, a hybrid, a tandem, or a tricycle (and everything in between) — 2nd Sundays at the market are meant for you and your favorite pair of wheels.

  • Free Mechanic Check-ups by Bay Area Bikes | 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., near the Info Booth

A bike mechanic from Bay Area Bikes will be on hand to do bike safety checks and recommend any adjustments. Need something fixed? Bay Area Bikes just opened a service shop alongside their bike rental store here in Jack London Square!

Spokeland mechanics give on-demand demonstrations on how to diagnose and fix a flat tire — or other basic bike fixes if you’re interested! Afterwards, ask questions, get advice, talk about bikes, and learn more about the non-profit work they’re doing in North Oakland.

  • Leave Your Bike, Take the Yuba | 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., near the Info Booth

Bay Area Bikes is lending their Yuba Cargo Bike to any cyclist who needs a bigger, sturdier ride to take their groceries home. Leave your bike or a credit card, and take the Yuba for a spin, free of charge. It will also be available for test rides at the market.

  • Free Bike Shepherd Registration | 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., near the Info Booth

Connect your name and contact info to your bike’s serial number, decrease the chance of theft, and increase the chance of recovering your bike just in case! Registration and information provided by Bay Area Bikes.

  • Free Spoke Cards | 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., at all bike-related booths

Come grab a free laminated card from today’s event to stick in your spokes! Collect unique spoke cards from any four of our monthly bike days to earn a free flat-fix kit!

June 17 | Eat Better, Move More

Nutrition scientist and author Marion Nestle couldn’t have put it any better: if we want to be healthier, we need to eat better and move more! Every 3rd Sunday at the farmers’ market this winter is dedicated to this idea, so we feature nutritionists, cooking demos, free fitness activities, and other health and wellness events to help you get healthier, happier, and in shape for 2012!

Eat Better:

Nutrition educators from Common Seed Nutrition partner with Market Chef Mario for a lesson on eating healthy and how to do it with produce at today’s market!

  • Free Nutrition Consultations | 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Sign up at the information booth for a 15-minute one-on-one consultation with a nutrition educator from Common Seed Nutrition, a North Oakland organization dedicated to making health education affordable and accessible to everyone. Ask to take their zinc test (free!) to see if you’re getting as much of this mineral as you need!

Move More:

  • Free Yoga with Tim Meissner | 9:30 a.m. on the Market Green at Broadway
  • Free Zumba with Jazzie Jazz | 12 p.m. on the Pavilion Plaza patio

More events to be announced soon!

Do you have any food booths at this market, if so, who is there weekly? It will be nice to hear about the vendors and what kind of food they sell.
